William Edward “Bill” Shanholtzer, Sr.

June 26, 1935 - January 21, 2018

William Edward “Bill” Shanholtzer, Sr., 82, of Winchester, VA passed away Sunday, January 21st at Rose Hill Health and Rehabilitation in Berryville, VA.  Born in Cumberland, MD on June 26, 1935, he was the son of the late Edgar J. and Elfrieda M. (Poland) Shanholtzer.  He is also preceded in death by an infant sister, Betty Jean Shanholtzer.

Bill is survived by his three children, William E. (Bill) Shanholtzer, Jr. and wife Shawn of Manteo, NC; Lisa G. Whitt and husband Jeff of Fuquay-Varina, NC; and Jean Marie Shanholtzer of Henrico, VA.  He is also survived by nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Bill was raised in Romney and graduated from Romney High School in 1953.  He was a self-taught musician and at an early age he learned to play the steel guitar.  As his skill on the steel guitar and dobro progressed, he started playing in bands.  Some may remember Bill playing with Johnny Norris & the Free State Boys, Wishing Well, and the Country Caravan.  He also accompanied well known artists such as Conway Twitty and Louise Mandrell.  Bill even had the opportunity to provide the musical entertainment for the Environmental Ball during President Bill Clinton’s first inauguration.

Bill was an avid train enthusiast and model railroad collector.  He was certified as a small engine mechanic and a retiree from Sears.  He will be truly missed by many.

Friends will be received Saturday, January 27, 2018 from 1:00 PM till 2:00 PM at Romney First United Methodist Church.  Funeral services will immediately follow at 2:00 PM with Rev. Dr. Roy Knight officiating.  Interment will be at Indian Mound Cemetery in Romney.
