Stephen C. Hansberger

July 19, 1961 - February 15, 2019

Stephen C. Hansberger, MSW, age 57 of Romney, WV (formerly of Frederick, MD) passed away peacefully Friday, February 15, 2019 at his residence.

Born in Baltimore, MD on July 19, 1961 he is preceded in death by his father, LeRoy S. Hansberger and by his sister, Anne Marie Hansberger.

Stephen is survived by his mother, Charlotte M. Hansberger of South Carolina; his brother, Richard Hansberger of Florida; his companion of 22 years, Virginia “Jenny” Porter; her two daughters, Lisa Simpler and Kara Edwards; grandson, John A. Way; and several nephews, a niece and numerous relatives as well as his two furry friends, Casper and Sheba.

Stephen had been an educator at Frederick Community College, a Durable Medical Equipment business owner, and an environmentalist.  He was a great steward to this earth enjoying Native American spirituality and history.  He was a gardener of native trees, shrubs, and flowers.  Stephen loved nature and wildlife.  He was also a gifted writer, poet, and avid Baltimore Ravens fan.

Stephen had many lifelong friends and will be remembered and missed by all who knew him.

To serve the educational and research needs of mankind, Stephen made the humanitarian decision to gift his body so that the gift of life may be given to others.

The family requests that memorial contributions in Stephen’s name be made to:  Hospice of the Panhandle ~ 278 North High St. ~ Romney, WV 26757

  1. Stephen was my friend in our younger years and I visited him in tough times. While we lost touch over the years, I smile knowing what he was able to accomplish. I’m also glad he was able to find love with someone who shared his journey. My sincerest condolences to Jenny and the family. Prayers for comfort and peace in the days ahead.

  2. Uncle Steven you’re definitely going to missed. I always looked up to you we had a lot of great times together a lot of memories I’ll cherish forever. You pop up Annie pie and Chris are having a great time up there I’m sure. Until I see you guys again I love you

  4. To my friend and buddy Steven : Hadn’t seen you in quite some time ,you and Jenny moved west to Romney and Amy and I to Rehoboth Beach Delaware. Fortunately I learned of your illness in time to reach you by phone. We have been friends since “1978” , that’s 41 years that at times were events that would make some folks cringe, some laugh , some cry , some envy , some condemn , some cheer , some run , and some like me just accept you for the unique individual and overachiever whose smile and personality made me draw you closer as a really good friend. Gonna miss you and think about you , and talk about you with mutual friends from time to time. Glad we were able to say goodbye one friend telling the other ” LOVE YAH MAN ” RIP Brother

    We saw in Steve a strong-willed man, who chose to be part of what was happening for the betterment of the community, despite the obstacles that were thrown in his path. He was a good man, who cared deeply and will be missed. May he now be at peace. With much love and heart-felt sympathy.
