Born and raised in Hampshire County, Jean went to work at the early age of 14 at The New Century Hotel. At age 16, her brother Donald sent her a bus ticket to come and visit with him at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma Army Base where she met and soon married Calvin Miller, who was also in the Army. They started their family and moved to Germany. Calvin’s military career took them to multiple and various military installations and concluded in Florida where they owned and operated a motel. It was in the late 60’s they moved back to Romney where Jean filled the role of mother and wife. Being part of a family with an extremely strong work ethic, Jean and her sister Shirley cleaned, wall papered and whatever else someone needed doing. Hard work was part of her life, and she did that until she could no longer.
If you knew Jean, chances are good you knew how she felt about you, with little doubt. She was a woman of few words and always got right to the point. Most will remember her as being very serious and she certainly had her own opinions, however, there was also a very kind, caring and generous side to Jean. Her brother Jerry related a story from just this past Tuesday. Jean checked herself out of the hospital because of a cat, Tippy. Tippy had gotten loose and had not come home and she was going to find that cat, hospital or not. Jean passed many pleasant hours painting, and she usually always had a book open pursuing her love of reading.
