Sheila (Downey) Melzac

November 4, 1930 - March 6, 2020

Sheila (Downey) Melzac, age 89, of Romney, WV died at home on Friday, March 6, 2020.

She was the daughter of the late Theresa (Waters) Downey and Leo T. Downey, Sr.  Her husband, Vincent Melzac, predeceased her on October 11, 1989.  Also preceding her in death was her sister, Jule Slagle and a brother, Leo T. Downey, Jr., a step-son, Stephen Melzac and step-daughter, Christine Jasmin.

Mrs. Melzac was a graduate of Catholic Girls Central High School, class of 1948, and Catholic Girls Central Business School.  Prior to her marriage in 1984, she was employed by the former Liberty Trust Co. for 35 years.  While employed, she completed several banking courses.  Mrs. Melzac was the owner of Locust Hills Farms, Three Churches, WV and was a charter member of the Hampshire County Chamber of Commerce.

Mrs. Melzac was an active member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Romney where she had formerly been a Eucharistic Minister and most recently served as a greeter and a member of the Hospitality Committee.  She also retained a lifetime membership in Our Lady of The Mountains – St. Patrick, Cumberland, MD.

Survivors include a brother, John W. Downey, Biglerville, PA, four step-grandchildren, and eight nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received on (TO BE DETERMINED) from 10:30 to 12:00 noon at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Romney.  A Mass of Christian Burial will immediately follow at  12:00 noon with Father Giles LaVasseur serving as Celebrant.  Interment will be at Branch Mountain Cemetery, Three Churches, WV.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Our Lady of Grace Church, 299 School St., Romney, WV  26757

  1. On behalf of all of us in the Alexandria, Virginia branch of the Downeys, I send the family our heartfelt prayers in this time of loss. Sheila was a remarkable lady—beautiful, graceful, joyful, generous, strong and level-headed, with a heart of gold. May she enjoy the fullness of eternal life with her beloved Vincent, and with all who preceded her into heaven. God bless you, dear Sheila.

  2. Sheila, you will be missed! I will always remember your story of how you and Vincent met. Each time we talked you would always ask if I met anyone special . I would always respond that I have not yet met my Vincent. I believe the two of you are now together- I know how much you truly loved each other. I am so thankful for your family for sending me notice. Say hi to Kulew LHF for me when you see him. I will cherish my memories of all of you until we meet again.

  3. Shelia, you will surely be missed in our community. You sweet smile and kind heart have touched us all. I have always treasured your friendship. Rest in peace, my friend.

  4. She had such a giving heart. The members of the Branch Mt. Cemetery Committee are so thankful to her for her donation of land to the Cemetery. Such a lovely lady. Will miss having conversations with her.

  5. I will cherish all the memories of the past years, our conversations, and how much she loved our family. Our family loved Sheila like she was part of us. She was a very genuine, honest, sincere, and loving person. Will miss her so very much.

What do I say you already know how I feel you always have I thought you would live forever by always being 29 on your birthdays although I knew eventually you would go home you now are and have always been in my heart I am now no longer little Sheila except in my memories I love you Aunt She always have and always will
