Roy D. Kuykendall, MSG (Retired), of Romney, died peacefully at home under the care of Hospice of the Panhandle. He was 76.
Roy was preceded in death by his mother, Leoda Abendschoen; his stepfather, Charles Abendschoen; his brother, Donald Bosely; his mother-in-law, Viola Combs; and (2) sons-in-law, Michael D. Steele and Dale Rotruck. He is survived by his beloved wife, Sharon Kuykendall; his children, Connie L. Steele of Romney and Bobbie J. Clifton (husband Stephen) of Mt. Jackson, VA; (5) grandchildren, Lilli Sites, Cassandra Williamson, Richard Ketterman, Jr., Devon Presnell, and Anthony Vetter; (4) great grandchildren, Katie, Logan, Allyssa, and Percy; his sister-in-law, Betty Bosley; his niece, Angela Rossier; and his nephew, Carl Bosley.
The principle focus of Roy’s life was that of a soldier. He retired after 23 years with the United States Army as a Master Sergeant in the 82nd and 102nd Airborne. Roy was the recipient of a Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Army Commendation, Army Good Conduct, Army Service, National Defense Service, Army Over Seas Service, Army NCO Professional Development, Parachute, and Retirement Award(s). Roy received an Honorable Discharge after serving (2) tours in The Republic of Vietnam Campaign. For his marksmanship, Roy received and Army Expert Qualification Badge.
Roy supported all Veterans in every way humanly possible. He was a Lifetime Member of; the MMC, Chapter 172 Vietnam Veterans of America, and the National Rifle Association. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) Post 1101, The American Legion-Post 91, The Community Bible Church, and The Loyal Order of The Moose- Lodge 1371.
Roy loved the outdoors as evidenced by his love of camping, motorcycling and most of all, hunting. Roy was a quiet, unassuming man who made a difference wherever he was and whatever he did, and will leave an empty spot in Hampshire County.
Friends will be received on Thursday, January 2, 2020 from 5 to 7 PM at Shaffer Funeral Home in Romney, where funeral services will be held the following day, Friday, January 3, 2020 beginning at 10:45 AM with Rev. Jim Kinnamon officiating. Interment to follow at Ebenezer Cemetery, Mt. Top, Romney.
