Ralph Lawrence Hartman

May 15, 1929 - October 9, 2018

Ralph Lawrence Hartman, 89, of Keyser passed away Tuesday, October 9, 2018 at his residence.  Born at home in Junction, WV on May 15, 1929, he was the son of the late Guy R. and Margaret (Corbin) Hartman.

Besides his parents, Ralph was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Pearl Mae Hartman (d. January 15, 2014).  Four brothers; Frank, Harry, John, and Richard Hartman.  Two sisters; Dorothy Swanson and Louise Davis.

Ralph is survived by three daughters; Linda Mallow of Elkins, Jean Harman and husband Dr. Steven of Eckhart, MD, and Joan Hartman of New Creek.  One brother; Donald Hartman and wife Editha of New Creek.  One sister; Sally Wingate of Virginia.  He is also survived by seven grandchildren; Christopher Mallow, Elizabeth Thompson, Lucas Fleming, Jonathan Fleming, Dr. Benjamin Harman, Matthew Harman, and Dr. Rebecca Shilts as well as ten great grandchildren.

Ralph’s career(s) were several; he was in the U.S. Army for 20 years, then worked as a surveyor for 20 years for the USDA Soil Conservation and the final 20 years of his working career were spent at the family operated “The Can Do Construction Company” in Keyser.  He was a charter member of the Chapter 9 Disabled American Veterans, a member of the Calvary United Methodist Church, a longtime member of the Mill Creek Ruritan, a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans and was instrumental in the establishment of the National Veteran’s Cemetery in Grafton, WV.

Ralph was a devoted family man and a man of the community.  He was a wonderful role model for many in how to love, care, and nurture others.  He was all about helping whoever needed help, and anyone who knew him would agree that knowing Ralph made life a better place to be.

Friends will be received Monday, October 15, 2018 from 5:00 PM till 7:00 PM at Shaffer Funeral Home in Romney.  Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 16, 2018 at 11:00 AM at the funeral home with Pastor Wayne Gosnell officiating.  Interment will follow at Elijah High Cemetery, Purgitsville, with military honors accorded by the US Army Honor Guard.

  1. I had the pleasure of working with Ralph for 20 years. My sincere sympathy to the whole family. God be with you all. He will be missed.

  2. The 30+ years I spent at the Keyser DQ, Ralph’s greeting was always “Aloha”. It was always a pleasure seeing him and his twin girls, Jean and Joan. Ralph was a great person.
