Joseph Coleman

November 16, 1921 - April 25, 2018

Joseph Coleman, age 96, of Springfield, WV passed away on April 25, 2018 at the Hospice Unit at the VA Center in Martinsburg, WV.  Born on November 16, 1921 in Midland, MD, he was the son of the late William T. and Mary Catherine (Hixenbaugh) Coleman.

Joe was the last of his siblings being preceded in death by five brothers; John Francis, William, Patrick, Michael and his twin, Raymond.  Five sisters; Marie, Margaret, Eleanor, Assunta and Catherine.

Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Lilian “Virginia” (Hull) Coleman; a daughter, Karen S. Ramsey (husband Robert) of Dallas, GA, (2) sons; Michael J. Coleman (wife Sheri) of Springfield, WV and William H. Coleman also of Springfield.  (4) grandchildren; Bailey V. Coleman, Jonathon M. Coleman, Elleigh J. Coleman and Katelyn S. Ramsey. (2) brothers-in-law; Gary Hull (wife Lana) of Hyndman, PA and David Hull of San Diego, CA.  (2) sisters-in-law; Hilda Brown and Shirley Corley (husband Jerry) of Cumberland, MD.  He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Joe was a lifelong farmer, member of the Springfield Presbyterian Church and Hampshire County and WV Farm Bureau.  He was a 1942 graduate of Romney High School and was a Veteran of WWII serving in the South Pacific.  He later attended Potomac State College and West Virginia University.  He returned to college later in life and received his R.B.A. from WVU.  He valued his education and encouraged the same for his children and grandchildren.

Always a community minded person, he was a former member of the Hampshire County Board of Education, Hampshire County Tax Payers Association, Springfield Elementary School PTA President, Springfield Presbyterian Church Elder and Springfield Ruritan.  Joe worked part time for the Cumberland Stock Yards, WV Soil Conservation Service and was a substitute teacher in Mineral and Hampshire County Schools.

Friends will be received on Saturday, April 28, 2018 from 2 to 4PM and 6 to 8PM at Shaffer Funeral Home in Romney where funeral services will be held on Sunday, April 29, 2018 at 2:30PM with Pastor Kevin Hay officiating.  Interment will follow at Springfield Hill Cemetery.

  1. My dad, Carl F Dorsey, talked a lot about Joe Coleman. I had the pleasure of meeting him once too. I am sorry for your loss, and my prayers are with your family.

  2. Billy , so sorry for the loss of your Father . Such a friendly person , the nut doesn’t fall far from the tree as you are a friendly person also . Will miss waving to Joe on the porch when we drive by . Hopefully we will see more of you on our trip to the Nesbit Camp this year , Condolences , Dave Nesbit , Orlando Florida .

  3. I wish love and light to your family during this time. Mr. Coleman seemed to be a great friend to our family, Kline/Hott for so many years. I have old pictures of him sitting down at camp. He came to my dad’s service and told me how much he liked “little jimmy kline”. He had a wonderful, kind heart and gleaming smile. My love and prayer,

  4. Billy and family, I was sorry to learn of your dad’s passing. My brother, Bill Nesbit really loved your parents. I will miss chatting with Joe on the porch when I go to the camp. What a really nice man. Remember your parents coming down to eat with us at Nesbit’s camp? The fresh corn was great! Virginia seemed to enjoy it, too. God bless all of you at this time. I believe we will see Joe again.

    Celebrate your Dad’s life and rejoice that he is at peace. You will see him again. He had a great life and he was a wonderful man.   9. Loved talking to pops,when he come to see lillian,a woman he truly loved.He loved talking about his cows.Mike and Sheri ,you do a wonderful job taking care of your parents,thanks for letting us meet this young feller,I know he will me missed.
