Jonah Karl Nazelrod, Sr.

October 8, 1932 - August 6, 2017

Jonah Karl Nazelrod, Sr. of Cumberland, MD (formerly of Romney, WV), age 84 died peacefully on Sunday, August 6th, 2017 at Devlin Manor Nursing Home in Cumberland, Maryland.

Son of the late Samuel E. Nazelrod and Grace Kesner Nazelrod, Jonah was also predeceased by his wife, Mildred Jane Dowden Nazelrod,  (3) brothers; Harry, Rudolph and Carl Nazelrod, (5) sisters; Goldie Self, Ruth Shanholtz, Mary Shultz, Bertha Holcomb and Lena Martin, (1) grandson; Marcus “Markie” Clower.

Jonah is survived by (3) sons; Jonah K. Nazelrod, Jr. (wife Elizabeth) of Kirby, WV., Edward S. “Sam” Nazelrod (wife Judy) of Romney and Scott A. Nazelrod (wife Katyna) of Old Fields, WV., (5) grandchildren; Jonah Ray “J.R.” Nazelrod, Ashby Hawse, Samuel Hawse, Matthew Clower and Samuel Kesner and (2) great grandchildren; Ashlee Hurd and Christina Long.

Jonah was born in Hardy County on Sawmill Mountain and moved to several different areas with his family, including Charles Town and then back to Romney.  He went to school out Grassy Lick Road at the Blacklick School House, and in 1953  joined the U.S. Army serving in the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1955.  Jonah and Mildred were married in 1957 and soon after started their family.  He was a carpenter by trade, but could do anything.  Plumbing, tear an engine down and put it back together, fix anything and make most anything.  Jonah also worked for the Public Housing Authority doing all types of maintenance work.  His pleasures were simple and he enjoyed the outdoors.  Hunting, fishing and a good Western brought him much joy.  Jonah was a quiet, easy going, soft spoken man who never wanted to be the focus of attention and could always be counted on, without fail, to do the right thing.

Friends will be received on Tuesday, August 8th, 2017 from 5 to 8PM at Shaffer Funeral Home in Romney, where funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 9th at 10AM with Pastor Glen Self officiating.  Interment to follow at Ebenezer Cemetery, Romney.
