Jonah was born in Hardy County on Sawmill Mountain and moved to several different areas with his family, including Charles Town and then back to Romney. He went to school out Grassy Lick Road at the Blacklick School House, and in 1953 joined the U.S. Army serving in the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1955. Jonah and Mildred were married in 1957 and soon after started their family. He was a carpenter by trade, but could do anything. Plumbing, tear an engine down and put it back together, fix anything and make most anything. Jonah also worked for the Public Housing Authority doing all types of maintenance work. His pleasures were simple and he enjoyed the outdoors. Hunting, fishing and a good Western brought him much joy. Jonah was a quiet, easy going, soft spoken man who never wanted to be the focus of attention and could always be counted on, without fail, to do the right thing.
