James Stephen Richards, Sr.

March 30, 1932 - November 6, 2017

James Stephen “Jim” Richards, Sr., 85, of Fort Ashby, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday, November 6th at his residence.  Born March 30, 1932 in Keyser, he was the son of the late James L. and Toleda G. (Goff) Friend.

Jim is survived by the mother of his children, Peggy Ann (Michaels) Paul.  A son; James Stephen Richards, Jr. and wife Danielle of Springfield.  A daughter; Ann Marie Minnigh and husband Richard of Prattville, Alabama.  A brother; Robert E. Richards and wife Lillian of Westernport.  A half-sister; Joan Wright of Keyser.  He is also survived by four grandchildren; Tyler Richards, Sherilyn Minnigh, Dustin Richards and Logan Richards.

Jim was raised in Keyser and attended Mineral Co. Schools.  He enlisted in the US Navy (1950-1953), earning his GED in 1957 and graduating from West Virginia University in 1963.  He taught high school in Ohio and Fort Ashby leading him to a career with Juvenile Services in the State of Maryland at Green Ridge Boy’s School from which he retired with more than 25 years of service.

Jim found pleasure in many things; he was a MEGA fan of sports at West Virginia University and he loved to hunt.  He enjoyed music, reading, yard sales, auctions and old automobiles (with special emphasis on Corvettes).  Jim was well known for leaving the house with no particular need or destination in mind, and coming home with stuff; an old car, a model of an old car, or any article of merchandise that caught his eye.  He was a good provider, a gentle soul and a nice guy who will be truly missed.

A Memorial Mass will be held at the Annunciation of Our Lord in Fort Ashby on Friday, November 10, 2017 at 6:00 PM with Rev. Fr. Mike Lecias officiating.  Friends and family may gather in the social hall one hour prior to service.  Military honors will be accorded by US Navy.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to: St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital ~ 262 Danny Thomas Dr. ~ Memphis, TN 38105 / (800) 822-6344 / www.stjude.org

  1. Ann and Jimmy (and families)
I am so very sorry for your loss. I have so many fond memories of your Dad from childhood. We spent so many hours playing cards at the dining room table in your house. Your Dad is the only reason I survived Algebra I and II and was the only one who was ever able to explain it it me in a way that made sense.
I hope your happy memories will help you through this difficult time. Sending love and prayers your way.
