James David “Jim” Heavener

May 7, 1928 - February 11, 2018

James David “Jim” Heavener, 89, of Romney passed away Sunday, February 11th at his residence.  Born May 7, 1928 in Romney, he was the son of the late Frank S. and Leona (Everett) Heavener.

Besides his parents, Jim is preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Ruth Heavener (d. January 23, 2017).  Two brothers; Frank, Jr. and Jack Allen Heavener.  A sister; Virginia E. “Peg” Graham and a foster brother, James Shingleton.

Jim is survived by his daughters, Diann E. Ganoe and husband Donnie and Jamie M. Cramer and husband Eric, all of Romney.  A brother; Paul E. Heavener and wife Barbara of Walnut Cove, N.C.  Two grandchildren; Gary W. “Tater” “Farmer” Pyles, II and wife Michelle of Slanesville and Kember James Cramer.  Jim is also survived by two great grandchildren; Breanna J. Martin and husband Jeff of Inwood, WV and Alyssa Pyles as well as a great-great granddaughter, Allie Joy.

Jim graduated from Romney High with the class of 1950, and soon after joined the U.S. Army serving in the Korean War from 1950 to 1952.  After his military service, he met Shirley in 1953 and they married in ’54 and started their family back in Romney.  Jim worked at the WV School for The Deaf and Blind in maintenance from which he retired.  He was a life member of the VFW, Wappacoma 1101, Disabled Vets of America, the American Legion, and Ebenezer United Methodist Church.  In more recent times, Jim attended God’s Word Fellowship Church at Indian Heights.

Jim never got too excited over matters, but he did have definite boundaries. He was one who generally looked on the positive side of things.  Many mornings Jim could be found at either Burger King or McDonald’s socializing.  He enjoyed the outdoors and did his share of hunting and fishing, and liked the roll of “instigator” where having a good time was concerned.  He loved sports of all kinds, but there was nothing more important than his friends and family, with the apple of his eye being his granddaughter Kember James.

Friends will be received on Wednesday, February 14, 2018 from 1:00 PM till 3:00 PM and from 5:00 PM till 7:00 PM at Shaffer Funeral Home in Romney.  Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, February 15, 2018 at 11:00 AM with Pastor Dave Simmons officiating.  Interment will follow at Ebenezer Cemetery in Romney.
