James Calvin “Indian” Close, Sr.

November 30, 1935 - May 29, 2018

James Calvin “Indian” Close, Sr., age 82, of Berkeley Springs, WV, died on Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at his home while under the care of Hospice of the Panhandle.

 Born November 30, 1935 in Berkeley Springs, WV, he was the son of the late William Henry and Margaret Belle Karns Close.

 He was a Christian. Mr. Close attended public schools in Morgan County, WV and had worked, for many years, as a lineman installer with Western Union. He also had owned and operated the Alpine Café in Romney, WV. He was a member and past Governor of Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #1371 in Romney and a member of the NRA. He enjoyed hunting and camping.

 Surviving are his children, James Calvin Close, Jr. of Berkeley Springs, Sharon Kay Ayers of Romney, WV and Sandra Dee Williams of Pasadena, MD, 21 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

 In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Ann Gregory Close, two children, Susie Belle Lutman and Henry William Close, Sr., five sisters, Thelma Virginia Payne, Edna Marie Alderton, Agnes Louise Smith, Helen Vitalis Eppinger and Mary Elizabeth Close, and two brothers, John William Close and Albert Edward Close.

 The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. on Friday at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 95 Union Street, Berkeley Springs, WV and from 5-8 p.m. on Saturday, June 9 at Shaffer Funeral Home, 230 E. Main Street, Romney, WV. Services and interment will be private.

 In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Hospice of the Panhandle, 330 Hospice Lane, Kearneysville, WV 25430.

  1. So sorry to hear of Jim’s passing. He was brilliant and quick witted and lots of fun. Bill worked with him on ‘The Hill’ and we truly enjoyed being in business next door to the Alpine Cafe. Rest in Peace.
