Ione Decima (Potter) Abell

February 13, 1920 - November 27, 2018

Ione Decima (Potter) Abell, age 98, of Romney, WV died peacefully at the Hampshire Center on Tuesday, November 27, 2018.

Ione is the daughter of the late Ward Elsworth Potter, Sr. and Mary Jane Sanders Potter.  She is also predeceased by her husband, Francis O. Abell (d. 1973), (3) brothers; Ward Potter, Jr., Carroll Potter and Paul Potter, and (1) sister; Theda McDonald.

She is survived by her daughter, Janet Louise Abell Park Broome of Romney, WV., (2) grandchildren; George S. Park (wife Becky) of Romney, WV and Denise L. Halterman (husband Brad) of New Creek, WV., (4) great grandchildren; George S. Park, III, Aaron M. Park, Zachary C. Halterman and Alexis C. Halterman, (3) great-great grandchildren; Sawyar G. Park, Morgan L. Park and Zoey M. Park.  Ione is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Ione was born and raised in Romney and grew up in the Ebenezer Methodist Church.  She graduated with the class of 1938 from Romney High School, and soon after, met and married Francis O. Abell in 1939.  They soon started their family and she enjoyed all the elements that go along with such a venture, including helping in the family business, Abell & Sons Jewelry, until it closed.  Ione then moved up the street to Daskal’s Pharmacy where she worked as a Bookkeeper, retiring in the mid 80’s.

She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Romney, volunteered at Helping Hands and the Long Term Care unit at Hampshire Memorial Hospital.  Ione enjoyed children and doing things with them.  Her personality left no doubt what she thought about things and she enjoyed being independent.  She was a very “matter of fact” person who had no trouble getting right to the point.  She had an unparalleled drive all her life.  While making funeral arrangements the fact surfaced that starting about 8 years ago, she had entered Hospice Care three different times, and was discharged all three times.  She just kept going.

Ione enjoyed many hobbies and pleasures; ceramics, quilting, crocheting, sewing, reading and cooking brought her many hours of contented joy. Sunday dinners at The Mountain Top with friends was also a favorite.  She had a special love for the outdoors and her yard.  She enjoyed a “green thumb” and took great pride in everything being “just so.”  There was nothing any more important than her family, and her compassion and love for them will be dearly missed.

Friends will be received on Saturday, December 1, 2018 from 12PM to 2PM at the Ebenezer United Methodist Church, Mt. Top in Romney, where funeral services will be held at 2PM with the Rev. Dr. Stephon Reed officiating.  Interment will follow at the Ebenezer Cemetery.

5 condolences for “Ione Decima (Potter) Abell”

  1. We are so sorry for your loss. We attended church at First Baptist with Ione. I enjoyed getting to know Ione thru our ladies group, of which she was very active. She was a very kind lady and will be missed.

  2. I had the pleasure of growing up with Ione as a nei. Her character as “just so” likely allowed her co-existence in a pleasurable way with her in laws. The Ables were meticulously“just so.”
It’s not just anyone, but a very special person, that can fit in with a jeweler and his wife, even more meticulous than he.
Ione was always pleasant, always patient, always kind. Bless her.
