Harriet Davis Griffith

April 25, 1930 - September 29, 2017

Harriet Davis Griffith, 87, of Martinsburg, passed away Friday, September 29th at the Berkeley Medical Center.  Born April 25, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Dewey D. and Lula P. (Ganoe) Griffith.

Besides her parents, Harriet is preceded in death by her brother, Dewey Daily Davis and a sister, Shirley Ann Pomroy.

Harriet is survived by her husband of 64 years, Samuel G. “Sam” Griffith.  Three sons; Steve H. Griffith and wife Vanessa of Inwood, WV, Samuel G. Griffith, Jr. and wife Sandy of California, MD, and John D. Griffith and wife Kara of Romney, WV.  Two daughters; Susan D. Griffith and “trusty sidekick” Scott Henry of Martinsburg, WV and Luann E. Jenkins and husband Eric “Rick” of Bunker Hill, WV.  One sister; Patricia Philip and husband Fred of Hartford, CT.  Also surviving Harriet are nine grandchildren; Leah, Matthew, Jamie, Sam, Nicholas, Hillary, Caullen, Jacob, and Bethany and three great grandchildren; Xander, Harry, and Landin.  Harriet is also survived by many nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Harriet was born and raised in Romney, WV graduating from Romney High School in 1948.  After high school, she attended school in Winchester, VA earning her RN degree.  After working as a nurse in Winchester for about a year, she met Sam at the Apple Blossom Festival and they married the following year.  The young couple soon moved to Norfolk, VA and started their family.  After (5) children and 17 years, they moved back to their home state to Martinsburg.  Harriet was a wife, mom and nurse and devoted her life to doing an excellent job at all 3.  She worked at the Veteran’s Hospital in Martinsburg for 24 years, retiring from there and working at other medical facilities up into her late 70’s.  Her life was all about caring for others.

Harriet’s personality dictated organization, being very direct and everything and everybody being squared away.  She did not wear her sense of humor on her sleeve, however, those who knew her knew that it was in her soul and that Sam was the conduit for laughter.  Her life and her focus on others left little time for hobbies and clubs; she was always taking care of others, her dogs included.  No matter where they lived, in her heart, Romney, WV was always home.

Visitation will be held Thursday, October 5, 2017 from 12 Noon till 1:00 PM at Shaffer Funeral Home in Romney, WV.  Funeral services will begin at 1:00 PM with Pastor Devin Ward officiating.  Interment will follow at Ebenezer Cemetery in Romney.

  2. Sam, John & Kara,

The Home call of one of the most precious persons of our lives is a mixture of sorrow and joy ! Psalm 116:15 Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints !! Death was never intended for us to experience, so Jesus came and took our death ! Hallelujah and praise His name! So your beloved Harriet has graduated into the presence of her Savior and out of our presence. May He who continues to keep you connected to her because we are one in Christ bring you peace and comfort as you begin the process of being here without her presence. I experience being Homesick everyday for the eternal side of my existence but just wait on His coming to get His Bride or my own home call! I won’t be able to see you guys at the viewing or the service so know you are in our prayers we will pass the word to your extended family at Believers . Love you guys Randy
