Dr. Harold Charles Carl, II, of Belmont, WV, formerly of Hampshire County, WV, died on November 16, 2017. “Butch” as he was known to many, was born November 9, 1937, in Baltimore, MD, and was preceded in death by his parents, Harold C. Carl and Frances E. Carl, and a brother, William F. Carl.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Barbara Ann (Ansel) Carl and three children – H. Charles Carl, III, and wife Lisa of Romney, Helen C. Wells and husband G. Michael Wells, of Belmont, and Lori Ann Barnhart and husband Mark, of St. Marys.
Dr. Carl leaves behind eight cherished grandchildren – Holly E. (Carl) Dante and husband Ryan, Hannah Ansel Carl and Emily Catherine Carl, all of Romney, Catherine V. (Wells) Hamilton and husband Eric of St. Marys, Andrew Michael Wells of Belmont, Trenton Carl Barnhart, Grant Mitchell Barnhart, and Derek Scott Barnhart of St. Marys, WV, along with many nieces and nephews. Dr. Carl graduated from Romney High School in 1955, and then matriculated to Shepherd College, where he played football and baseball and was a member of their 1955 undefeated, championship football team, which was inducted into the Shepherd University Hall of Fame.
He was an all-around outstanding athlete, and was also inducted into the Hampshire County Athletic Hall of Fame.
He was very proud to have served a three-year hitch in the United States Marine Corps.
After earning his Bachelor’s degree at Shepherd College, Dr. Carl enjoyed a forty-two year career in public education, ranging from teacher, counselor, and coach, to superintendent, attaining Masters degrees in counseling from Frostburg State University and Educational Administration from James Madison University, and earning a Doctorate degree from West Virginia University. He began his career as head football and baseball coach at John S. Mosby Academy in Front Royal, VA, where his teams enjoyed great success.
He then became Athletic Director and head football coach at Stonewall Jackson High School in Mount Jackson, VA, before returning home to Hampshire County in 1969 as Assistant Principal and basketball coach at Romney Junior High School, coaching an undefeated basketball team.
In 1971, at age 33, he became superintendent of schools in Hampshire County, where he served for eleven years, he then served 15 years as Pleasants County Superintendent, and five years as Frontier Local School District Superintendent in Washington County, OH, before retiring in 2003. In all, he served 31 years as a school superintendent, receiving many distinguished appointments, accolades, and recognitions, while positively influencing the lives of students, colleagues, and friends along the way. He wrote a book titled “They’re With You Win or Tie” providing a humorous account of his 31 years of experiences as a school superintendent.
Harold was a member of the St. Marys United Methodist Church and the Clinton Lodge A.F. & A.M. in Romney, and was a long-time officer for the POPS (Power of Positive Students) International Education Foundation.
Harold was an avid hunter, and particularly enjoyed hunting each year in Springfield with his family, and also enjoyed many big game hunting trips out west and to Canada. He enjoyed golf and sporting events and loved spending time in Myrtle Beach, SC. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren in their athletic events, but most of all, he loved being with his wife, Barbara, who was the highlight of his life.
Friends will be received in St. Marys on Saturday, November 18, 2017, at Ingram Funeral Home from 2 to 8 P.M., and in Romney on Sunday, November 19, 2017, at Romney First United Methodist Church from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. A funeral service will be held in Romney on Monday, November 20, 2017, at Romney First United Methodist Church at 11:00 A.M., with internment to follow at Springfield Hill Cemetery with Military Rites. The family has requested that donations in Dr. Carl’s memory be made to the Pay It Forward Fund which benefits students and families of Pleasants County Schools, c/o.
