Geriel Eugene “Pete” Cheshire, 73, of Romney passed away Friday, February 15, 2019 at the Hampshire Center in Romney. Born September 11, 1945, he is the son of Virginia C. (Cheshire) Sirk of Romney.
Pete is preceded in death by his step-father, Eugene L. Sirk; his maternal grandparents, Burr W. and Iva C. (Haines) Cheshire; and a sister-in-law, Zanna (Haines) Sirk.
Besides his mother, Pete is survived by his wife of 53 years, Marie Jewel Cheshire of Romney. Their two sons, Geriel E. Cheshire, Jr. of Gore, VA and Eric L. Cheshire and wife Kimberley of Leesburg, VA; Four grandchildren, Emily J. Brown and husband John, Cara A. Cheshire, Nicholas O. Cheshire, and Jordan P. Cheshire; Three half-brothers, Ronald L. Sirk of Winchester, Richard A. Sirk of Romney, and Larry L. Sirk of Romney; and one half-sister, Mary D. Arnica and husband John of Berkeley Springs.
Pete was born and raised on Black Lick Rd. (Starnes Rd.) in Romney and attended Hampshire Co. Schools. Pete went to work on a local orchard and at the age of 19 enlisted in the US Army. In 1965, after finishing basic training, he and Jewel married and Pete went on to serve his country for 3 years including time in Vietnam. After raising his family in Gore, VA, Pete and Jewel moved back to Romney in 1992 where he retired after 37 years of work at Abex.
Pete loved to fish. If he could fish every day, he would. He enjoyed his retirement. He like to hunt, do yard work, and split wood. He was a very hard worker and most of his hobbies were what people would call hard work. Pete was a very likable person and would do anything for you. He cared very much for his family and they will miss him dearly.
Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, February 19, 2019 at 1:00 PM at Ebenezer Cemetery in Romney with Dennis Voit officiating.
