DeLyle E. “Shake” Orndorff passed away, peacefully, at home with his family at his side on September 11, 2017. He was 74.
He is survived by his loving wife and family and a world of friends.
DeLyle was born and raised in Romney, WV, a town that he worked in and loved. He took much pride in his town. Whether it be sweeping the streets, fixing a water leak, painting curbs, plowing snow or other tasks, he truly loved Romney and the people in it.
He was a man of many nicknames. Some called him “Shake,” some called him “Fonz,” and his great great nieces and nephews called him “Quarterman.”
DeLyle never met a stranger and he would give the shirt off his back to help anyone. His annual trips to Florida to see his extended family he loved and adored (and they loved him) were always looked forward to, as well as the return trip home to his beloved mountains of West Virginia. He talked of moving to Florida, but he could never leave Hampshire County and the people in it. This was home.
Pleasures were found in simple ways for DeLyle; he loved to tinker with his lawnmowers, sit on the porch and watch traffic, take scenic rides and spending time with family and friends. He had a quick wit, and a response to most anything (and they were usually very funny). DeLyle was not above “stirring things up” and he loved to laugh. Many will remember DeLyle and his ways of keeping things “just so.” His trucks always sparkled and he always appeared “squared away.” Wherever you found DeLyle, chances are good things were mowed, polished, lined up, washed, neat and tidy. Above and beyond all that, DeLyle was a good husband, father, father-in-law and a good friend to many. He will be dearly missed.
Friends will be received at Shaffer Funeral Home in Romney on Thursday, September 14, 2017 from 6 to 8PM, with brief words of remembrance at 8PM from Denzil Davis. DeLyle’s interment will be private and at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of The Panhandle, 278 N. High St., Romney, WV., 26757.
