Andrew C. “Andy” Ayers

December 4, 1964 - December 27, 2018

Andrew C. “Andy” Ayers of Romney, age 54, died peacefully at Winchester Medical Center on Friday, December 27, 2018 after complications from prior health issues.

He is the son of the late David Eugene Ayers, Sr. and Beverly Jean (Shingleton) Ayers.  He is also preceded in death by his brother, David E. Ayers, Jr.

Andy is survived by his wife, Mary H. Ayers of Romney, his sister, Diane Raines (husband Roy) of Purgitsville, a granddaughter, Miranda Edwards of Waldorf, MD and a great grandson, Noah Edwards.  Andy is also survived by many nieces, nephews and a world of friends.

He is a past Vice President of the Romney Volunteer Fire Department where he served as the Safety Officer, a founding member of the Romney Rotary Club and a member of the Sons of The American Legion, Hampshire Unit 91.

Andy was born and raised in Romney and graduated with the class of 1984 from Hampshire High.  Andy worked at various jobs out of town and moved back to Romney where he went to work at Hampshire Memorial Hospital.  It was there he suffered a massive stroke at the age of 27 that forever changed his world.  It took Andy 5 years of rehab to re-learn everything, however, nothing could deter him from getting better.  He persevered and did his best to get home and have life return to some sense of normalcy.  Back home, his life centered around the Romney Volunteer Fire Department, his friends, and doing a host of odd jobs around the community.  Andy was a regular at Shirley’s/Romney Diner and you could always count on Andy for a friendly smile.  Andy’s life was forever changed for the better when he met and married Mary in 2006.  They became a family and many wonderful memories were made.  Andy was a world class prankster, jokester, and one who enjoyed a good time and laughter.  He never met a stranger and he will leave an empty spot in many hearts.

Friends will be received on Wednesday, January 2, 2019 from 1 to 3PM and 5 to 7PM at Shaffer Funeral Home in Romney where funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 3 at 11AM with Pastor Jim Mou officiating.  Interment will follow at Ebenezer Cemetery.
